Fortec Motorsport have confirmed Rafael Villagomez will contest the majority of the 2020 F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost season with the Daventry-based outfit.
The Mexican racer will dovetail eight weekends in Britain’s FIA-sanctioned Formula 4 series alongside his full-season campaign in the FFSA French F4 Championship after Villagomez triumphed in the prestigious Richard Mille Young Talent Academy scheme at Le Mans last December.
Richard Dutton’s outfit will field Villagomez at every event in 2020 aside from Brands Hatch (Indy) in April and the penultimate weekend at Silverstone (International) in September. His team-mate for the upcoming season will be Roberto Faria, the Brazilian returning to Fortec for a second campaign in the Ford EcoBoost-powered series.
“I’m happy to announce that I will be joining Fortec Motorsport for the 2020 F4 British Championship,” said Villagomez. “It will be my first year moving from karting and joining a team like Fortec is very exciting, I’ve already tested with the team and the feeling was great. I can’t wait to keep working with them and keep on improving throughout my first year. I want to thank my family, my manager and everybody around me. We will do our best and I can’t wait to get the season started!”
Fortec’s F4 Team Manager Oliver Dutton underlined his happiness at the news and believes all the signs are there for Villagomez to enjoy a successful graduation to single-seaters. “Everybody at Fortec Motorsport is delighted to welcome Rafael to the team,” commented Dutton. “His performance in the Richard Mille Young Talent Academy marked him out as ‘one to watch’ and, with a good track record in karting, I believe he has everything in place to enjoy plenty of success in single-seaters. We’ll certainly be pushing hard to help him make that a reality, and we’re looking forward to working with him during the year ahead.”
The 2020 season gets underway at Donington Park, Leicestershire, over the weekend of 28-29 March.
