2020 Formula Regional Americas Championship Powered by Honda – Linus Lundqvist Completes Dream Debut

Linus Lundqvist completed a perfect clean-sweep of the Formula Regional Americas opener at Mid-Ohio (USA) by repeating Saturday’s victory in another lights-to-flag display in Sunday’s Race 2.

Once again leading for the entirety of the event and setting the fastest lap of the race, Lundqvist’s debut weekend in FR Americas sums up to two race wins, two pole positions and two fastest race laps.

The emphatic stats ensure the Swedish series rookie leaves the season-opening round with a 14-point lead atop the championship standings – with a 2021 Indy Lights scholarship on offer for the eventual title-winner.

“This has been the perfect weekend, absolutely fantastic,” says an elated Linus Lundqvist. “It’s almost hard to take it in. I’ve been in the country for less than two weeks and to be able to achieve this kind of result already is just incredible. It speaks volumes about the way I’ve been integrated into my team by everyone at Global Racing Group. I’m only a cog in the wheel and I think we’ve demonstrated that we’re serious about being here to win. It was simply perfect, and you don’t get to say that very often in motorsport.”

Lundqvist, who also topped Friday’s practice session and went on to set a new qualifying lap record later the same day, won both of the weekend’s races ahead of David Malukas (USA).

Finishing third on Sunday was Malukas’ HMD Motorsports team-mate Santiago Urrutia (URY), already a two-time runner-up in the aforementioned Indy Lights series.

“Obviously I had to push hard to win, but at the same time it always felt very much under control,” Lundqvist continues. “I had a great car underneath me and the Honda engine performed perfectly, so all I had to do was hit my marks and stay within my limits. Having said that, I’m certain that our rivals will want to catch up very quickly. We can not afford to relax and we need to keep moving. For now, though, I will celebrate this for a few days and then it’s back to work.”

Formula Regional Americas is set to return to action on July 17-19 at Virginia International Raceway.
