The 18th race of the 2020 season on the Barcelona circuit saw Dennis Hauger (Van Amersfoort Racing) on pole, followed by his teammate Pierre-Louis Chovet, then Gianluca Petecof (Prema Powerteam), championship leader, his teammate and winner of the first two races on this circuit Oliver Rasmussen, then the other Prema driver, Arthur Leclerc.
Chovet started well and took the lead from Hauger, while Petecof also made a good start and tried an attack on the Norwegian, but without success. Chovet was first, followed by Hauger, Petecof, Leclerc, Nannini, who had a great start, and Rasmussen. It wasn’t long before the latter was on Nannini’s wing and attacking him, while the Italian attacked Leclerc.
The pair of VAR drivers in the lead stretched out a gap, with Petecof 2 seconds behind and Leclerc 1.3 second behind the Brazilian, with Nannini and Rasmussen very close behind. The fight between the latter two allowed the Monegasque to break away. Nannini kept Rasmussen at bay and acted as a roadblock, with Patrik Pasma and Konsta Lappalaine (both KIC Motorsport) very close to the Dane, but after several attempts, it was the Prema driver who prevailed following an error by the Monolite Racing driver, who until a few minutes from the end of the race had defended himself successfully.
So Chovet won with a good margin over teammate Hauger, from the championship leader Petecof, Leclerc, Rasmussen, who had managed to catch the Monegasque, but in an attempt to overtake had gone very wide losing several seconds, and Nannini sixth.
In the meantime, Prema Powerteam is officially team champion 2020!
The next and penultimate round of the season takes place on the weekend of November 22nd on the Imola circuit.
