Aitken takes Maiden Euroformula Open Win

A sunny, mild Sunday saw Jack Aitken snatch his maiden victory in the Euroformula Open. Briton Aitken put in a mature and faultless performance throughout the day and, just like Leonardo Pulcini yesterday, he set pole position, claimed the fastest lap and dominated the race for 19 laps.In the morning, Aitken stormed to pole position in an extremely closely fought qualifying session, as fourteen drivers were within the same second. Posting another record breaking lap time, the RP Motorsport driver beat Leonardo Pulcini (Campos Racing) to pole position. Damiano Fioravanti (RP Motorsport) and Diego Menchaca (Campos Racing) qualified 3rd and 4th on the grid, with Colton Herta (Carlin Motorsport) and Ferdinand Habsburg (Drivex) right behind.

Unlike yesterday, it was an incident-free first lap. Aitken made a solid start and set the pace from the very first lap, with Pulcini one of the few able to match his speed. Pushing a little more his metronomic pace of 1:34 was too much for Pulcini. Lap by lap, Aitken pulled away and at the end of the race, the British/Korean racing driver took the chequered flag nine seconds ahead of second-placed Pulcini. It was still an extremely rewarding weekend for Pulcini, as he is now first in the drivers’ standings.

Fioravanti rounded off the race for RP Motorsport as he came third. Fioravanti’s podium was under threat at the beginning, but finally the Italian racer secured his brilliant 3rd-place finish. Menchaca and Herta battled for fourth place, but the Mexican Campos Racing driver kept his US rival at bay.

Tatiana CalderĂ³n (Teo MartĂn Motorsport) and Habsburg played another eye-catcher role in the first laps but the Austrian lost his momentum, ran wide and dropped several places in the order to 9th. Igor Walilko (Fortec Motorsports) tried to overtake CalderĂ³n, but she finished 6th ahead of the Polish driver. 8th-placed Julio Moreno (Campos Racing) was able to fend off Habsburg, ninth, and Keyvan Andres (Carlin Motorsport) also claimed a top ten finish.

The second round of the Euroformula Open will be held at Spa-Francorchamps on 21-22 May.
