Pulcini secures pole position for Campos Racing on Saturday

The current series leader put his Dallara F312 on pole position for race one. Habsburg (Drivex) took second place ahead of Menchaca (Campos Racing), Aitken (RP Motorsport) and Fioravanti (RP Motorsport)

The Ardennes forest witnessed the weekend’s first qualifying session this afternoon. And the drivers duly put on a great fight. In fact, Leonardo Pulcini (Campos Racing) smashed the qualifying record to grab the first of two Spa pole positions. His time of 2:12.148 is almost three seconds quicker than the existing pole position record set by Sandy Stuvik in 2014. Pulcini recorded the best time of the morning session but, in FP2, Colton Herta (Carlin) led the way.

Later, in qualifying, Pulcini’s flying qualifying lap snatched race one pole from Austria’s Ferdinand Habsburg (Drivex), who was two tenths slower than his Italian rival. Habsburg still secured the remaining front row slot alongside Pulcini. Behind, another Campos Racing driver took 3rd spot on the grid, Mexico’s Diego Menchaca. Menchaca managed to beat Jack Aitken (RP Motorsport) by a few thousandths of a second. Damiano Fioravanti and Tanart Sathienthirakul locked out the third row for RP Motorsport ahead of Antoni Ptak, at the wheel of another car entered by Pampado/Rocca’s team. Igor Walilko (Fortec Motorsports) qualified 8th and Keyvan Andres and Herta rounded out the top ten for Carlin.

Euroformula Open debutant Enaam Ahmed (DAV Racing) put in an impressive performance and posted the 12th quickest time in Q1. JT Liang (Team West-Tec) also made his debut in the series though his results were not quite so impressive.
