Motopark on Top in Free Practice
Motopark duo Joel Eriksson (1:23.927 minutes) and Sérgio Sette Câmara (1:24.149 minutes) occupied first and second place in free practice of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship at the 4.326 kilomtres long Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria. George Russell (HitechGP, 1:24.213 minutes) and Ben Barnicoat (HitechGP, 1:24.287 minutes) were classified third and fourth.
At the start of free practice, the track wasn’t entirely dry yet, so the lap times became faster and faster as the 80 minutes’ session went on. With a few minutes remaining, Joel Eriksson posted the outright fastest time as he became the only driver to go under 1 minute 24 seconds. A few moments later, his team-mate Sérgio Sette Câmara moved up to second place, while George Russell improved to third in the closing stages as well. Ben Barnicoat proved unable to respond to the fast lap times set by the trio and thus dropped back from first to fourth in the final four minutes of the session.
Lance Stroll (Prema Powerteam, 1:24.347 minutes) ended up fifth in free practice for the tenth to twelfth race of the season, followed by Mikkel Jensen (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport, 1:24.398 minutes), Maximilian Günther (Prema Powerteam, 1:24.404 minutes), Callum Ilott (Van Amersfoort Racing, 1:24.504 minutes), Nick Cassidy (Prema Powerteam, 1:24.593 minutes) and Ralf Aron (Prema Powerteam, 1:24.643 minutes).
Meanwhile, guest driver Weiron Tan (Carlin, 1:26.474 minutes) was still having a difficult time. The driver from Malaysia, previously a competitor in the Pro Mazda Series in the US, where he ended up fourth with four victories in last year’s final drivers’ standings, was classified 21st after his first outing in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship.
