Win Number Two for Ahmed at Oulton Park
Carlin’s Enaam Ahmed took his second victory of the day at Oulton Park this afternoon, in round two of the 2017 BRDC British F3 Championship. The race one winner made the most of a chaotic opening lap and restart after the race was red flagged following a multi car incident on lap one. Team mate James Pull also improved on his grid slot to take fourth at the flag. Cameron Das recovered well after pitting at the end of the formation lap, going from the back of the field to sixth in the shortened race.
Taking to the damp track on slick tyres, the scene was set for a dramatic opening lap as the second race of the day got underway. Starting from fourth place, Das was the top Carlin starter in the reverse grid race with Pull starting seventh and race one winner Ahmed eighth.
Several drivers had moments during the formation lap, not least Das who was forced to pit before the race start, in need of a new front wing. As the remainder of the field lined up on the grid, the chaos quickly unfolded with several cars involved in a first lap incident. In the melee, Ahmed somehow managed to climb from eighth to second and Pull from seventh to fifth, as the safety car came out to neutralise the racing action. After further assessment, the race was red flagged to necessitate the removal of cars stranded at turn one.
As the race got underway for the second time, Callum O’Keeffe suffered wheel spin off the line, allowing Ahmed to steal through to take the lead. With the race now just four laps, Ahmed was looking good for his second win of the day. Das meanwhile was making impressive progress and was tenth at the restart. The 17-year-old wasn’t stopping there though, a lap later the young American was seventh, before making up another place to cross the line in sixth.
At the front, Ahmed was controlling the pace setting the fastest lap of the race on lap four, and taking victory by 7.7 seconds. Pull added a strong fourth place to his earlier second.
“I’m so happy to take a second win,” said Ahmed. “I think I’m quite strong in these in-between conditions. I just focused on making good starts. After taking the lead at the restart it was quite straight forward. The car felt awesome again, so thanks to the team.”
The final race of the weekend takes place at 17.35.
