Sacha Fenestraz is Ready as Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 Season Gets Underway

French-Argentinian racer Sacha Fenestraz hopes to hit the ground running with a win on the opening weekend of Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0.

With just hours to go until the drivers take to the track at Monza, the 17-year-old is aiming to rack up the points and get on the podium. The Josef Kaufmann Racing driver believes qualifying well and a good start during the races are the key at the Italian circuit. And the ADD Motorsports-supported teen wants the best possible start to the season as he looks to be among the title contenders from the off.

He said: “I’m really excited to get going at last. My winter tests were really good and I feel as though I’m in a great position for the start of the season. The first race is very important. Monza is a fast track, so the key is a good start and getting a good gap as quickly as possible. But as with all races, where you finish in qualifying is also crucial. I want to get some good points on the board and a win would make it a really great opening weekend.”

The 10-round 2017 calendar sees drivers get underway at Monza this weekend (April 21 – 23), before moving on to Silverstone, Pau and Monaco on consecutive weekends in May. They race at Hungaroring in June and Nürburgring and the Red Bull Ring in July. In August they switch to Le Castellet and September to Spa, before the season finishes in Barcelona at the end of October.

At the end, two drivers, including the series champion, will be admitted to the Renault Sport Academy, seeing them involved with the F1 team. Sacha raced with Tech1 Racing for last season’s Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 and NEC championships, claiming the rookie vice-champion crown and fifth place overall in both.

After moving to Josef Kaufmann Racing – the reigning Formula Renault team, rookie and driver championship winners – he has looked razor sharp in testing, even setting a new track record at the Nürburgring. And with a season in the competition under his belt, he is now looking to push on and compete for the title. He added: “I am focused on winning the championship, but to be in the top three by the end of the season would be really good.”

Fraser Sheader, director of performance and management team ADD Motorsports, said: “It’s great to finally get the season underway. We’ve tested well during the winter, but now I’m excited to see what the weekend brings. We are all raring to get on track and I’m confident that Sacha and the team will have a successful weekend and season.”
