Sowery Tops Times in Silverstone Testing

The fourth round of the 2017 BRDC British Formula 3 season takes place at Silverstone in Northamptonshire this weekend (10/11 June) and the event begins with qualifying at 10.40am and race one at 3.30pm today. Live updates and timing are available on the official British Formula 3 website, ensuring that fans won’t miss any of the action.

Carlin’s Enaam Ahmed stretched his title lead with a brace of victories at Snetterton last time out, his fifth and sixth of the season so far. In the opening race of the weekend he fell back to third at the start, but worked his way back to the front within two laps, and with pole position for the final race of the weekend, secured his second win of the meeting.

The second race at Snetterton was a lights-to-flag win from newcomer Jordan Cane. It was a dream debut for Jordan, who celebrated his 16th birthday just five days earlier.

Others to look out for on Snetterton form are James Pull, who took his first pole position in Saturday’s wet qualifying session, but is still searching for his maiden British F3 win. Toby Sowery enjoyed a return to form in Norfolk and will want to carry on this momentum at Silverstone, whilst Callan O’Keeffe and Cameron Das were also podium finishers.

Sowery topped the morning sessions in BRDC British F3 testing at Silverstone today (Friday), ahead of this weekend’s rounds of the championship.

Sowery was untouchable in both sessions, with title leader Ahmed getting closest to the Lanan driver in the opening test, and the Carlin driver was just over one tenth shy of his rival. Fortec’s Ben Hingeley, Carlin’s James Pull and Douglas Motorsport’s Jordan Cane were all within half a second of Sowery.

In the second morning session, only Pull could beat Sowery’s earlier time, and he was still almost seven tenths shy of the Lanan man. Cane was third, over second away from the ultimate pace, with Ahmed and Hingeley next up.

Other drivers to feature in the top ten in both sessions were O’Keeffe, Das, and Hillspeed’s Chase Owen.

Sowery went on to beat his best effort of the morning test sessions when testing resumed in the afternoon. O’Keeffe and Double R Racing’s Guilherme Samaia beat Sowery in the opening session of the afternoon, however. Both drivers posted their times late in the session, and Sowery could not dip into the 1:27 second bracket that he had lapped in before lunch.

Pull and Hingeley completed the top five in the first of the afternoon’s two sessions.

In the final session, held late in the afternoon, Sowery posted several quick laps to end the day quickest overall with a best effort well over a tenth quicker than he had managed in the morning.

Second in the final session was O’Keeffe, carrying on his strong afternoon form with a lap quicker than he had managed just after lunch. Das was third, followed by team-mate Ahmed and Fortec’s Hingeley. Also featuring in the top ten throughout the afternoon were Cane, Owen and Maldonado.

It’s very positive,” Sowery said summing up the day. “Top in three of the four sessions, and a bit of a gap to second in all of them that we topped, so it’s looking really positive.”
