Double Podium to End Strong Weekend at Silverstone
Carlin’s James Pull and Enaam Ahmed have rounded off a strong weekend of racing at Silverstone with a second double podium for the team in the BRDC British Formula Three Championship. The pair fought well between themselves in the latter stages of the race with Pull crossing the line in second and Ahmed in third. Cameron Das rounded off a weekend full of strong points with a fifth place finish – ensuring all three Carlin cars end the weekend nicely in the top five.
As ever the third race of the weekend was set based on the fastest laps cumulated from the previous two races of the weekend. Ahmed lined up third on the grid, this morning’s podium finisher Pull started fifth and Das in eighth. Once again off the line it was Pull who had the best launch and a great first lap which elevated him immediately to second position overall. Team mate Ahmed dropped back initially however took advantage of Ben Hingeley and Callan O’Keeffe running wide pushing him up to third overall as the pair began to hunt down Toby Sowery at the front.
Das meanwhile had enjoyed a solid start and by the end of the first lap was in sixth however the young American made sure to push even harder and in no time he was all over the back of Jordan Cane in his efforts to move further up the field. Placing his car perfectly he pulled off arguably the move of the race to claim fifth position as his own – and pulled a gap over Cane in the process.
However at the front, as had been the case for most of the weekend so far, Sowery led and was holding a strong advantage over the rest of the field. This in turn meant that the battle over the remaining two podium positions was the most excitable to watch on track. The Carlin pair of Pull and Ahmed ran nose to tail however Pull was not going to lose his second place and defended extremely well as he looked to keep the Championship leader behind him. Despite trying and putting his car in all the right places, Ahmed found himself blocked well by Pull and the pair crossed the line with Pull leading Ahmed in second and third respectively – ensuring the second double podium of the weekend. Das meanwhile improved on his position well to take a strong fifth place after a race in which he gained three spots over his rivals.
Pull said of second place, “I probably had my best start of the weekend and made a pretty tight move around the outside to get O’Keeffe at the start and then made sure to be consistent and calm in the rest of the race. I saw that Enaam [Ahmed] was catching me as well so knew that a battle was on the cards. We trust each other so we knew that we could fight really well, fairly and have a lot of fun with one another and after a tough race this morning it was good to be in second today. Big thanks to the team today for their hard work again.”
Ahmed added, “I bogged down a little yesterday so really tried to light it up off the line but got wheel spin so I dropped back a little. However I made the positions back when Hingeley and O’Keeffe ran wide at the last corner. After that I started to catch James [Pull] and we had one of the best fights ever! We gave each other just enough room, a lot of respect and I kept trying to send it – it was awesome! However in the last couple of laps, I decided to just settle and get the points. A good weekend overall with the car feeling mega.”
Das summed up, “I lost position off the line however managed to get it back a few corners later and then started to put the pressure on [Jordan] Cane ahead. I tucked in and was able to make a move at the chicane and try and chase down those ahead. It was a little hard but good fun this weekend overall. Silverstone has a lot of chances for overtaking so that leads to great racing and I love the high speed nature of the track.”
