Newey Races to More Points at Norisring

Harrison Newey raced to a pair of points scoring positions at the most recent round of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship held at the demanding Norisring street circuit in Germany last weekend.

18 year-old Newey took his Van Amersfoort Racing Dallara-Mercedes to a fighting fifth position in race one and a seventh place finish in the second of the 42 lap encounters.

Race one began with yet another fine start for Newey from 10th on the starting grid, and he was soon fighting with teammate Joey Mawson and Indian racer Jehan Daruvala for seventh place. This entertaining battle came to a head in Newey’s favour when Mawson was in collision with Daruvala.

Newey raced on to fifth position and even had to contend with a damaged rear of the car after lightly brushing one of the notorious Norisring walls.

Race two witnessed Newey start from seventh on the grid and hold on to the position all the way to the chequered flag in a race devoid of any significant overtaking opportunities. He did though put intense pressure on VAR teammate Pedro Piquet for sixth, but ultimately feel just short by 0.5s.

In the third and final race of the weekend Newey managed to make some progress up the field after a challenging qualifying session. But just he was making some notable progress and targeting a third straight points finish, his race was compromised by contact received from Japanese driver Tadasuke Makino. The push to the rear of Newey’s VAR Dallara-Mercedes caused him to spin and the subsequent recovery to the track shuffled him back down to a frustrated 15th position.

Harrison will next be in action at sixth round of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship held at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium on July 27-29 July.

“We struggled in qualifying a bit this weekend and we should have been higher up on the grids than we were. The pace was reasonably good and we got some good points from the weekend. It would have been nicer to have been higher up in race two because I think on merit and speed we could have done it, but overall we showed again we can be in and around the top six consistently. Again the qualifying performance has to be better going forward but we are working together as a team to get this improved. I feel that we have some strong foundations to work on from the first half of the season and when we have been in position to race hard in the top six I have shown that I can get results. I’m really looking forward to Spa later this month and am confident we can race for podiums and add significantly to the current points tally we have gathered.”
