Four Wins from Six for Verchoor and MP Motorsport
Motorland Aragon in Spain provided the venue for a magnificent triple race-winning outing for MP Motorsport and rising Dutch star Richard Verschoor over the weekend, 25th/26th June, during the second event of the inaugural FIA F4 Spanish Championship.
Off the back of a superb start to the campaign two weeks earlier in Navarra – where Verschoor made history for the team by taking the championship’s maiden pole position and then converting it into a dominant lights-to-flag win, before taking another podium in round two – during this past weekend’s action in Aragon the 15-year-old delivered a faultless performance.
Verschoor, who runs as a Red Bull Junior Team-backed driver, was unbeatable in rounds four, five and six at Motorland, the final race of the weekend marking the best outing of the season so far for MP Motorsport with Xavier Lloveras and Jarno Opmeer joining Verschoor in a podium lock-out.
Opmeer, who currently leads the SMP F4 NEZ Championship from Verschoor, is second in the F4 Spanish series after the opening two events. With third and second place results in rounds one and two in Navarra, the 17-year-old added three more podiums at Motorland.
Having led round four for almost the entire duration, the Dutchman was challenged by team-mate Verschoor late-on with the lead changing hands on the final lap. Going on to take second place, he then raced to third position in rounds five and six.
Spanish racer Lloveras missed out on a rostrum result in round three in Navarra following an unfortunate retirement, but he made amends in the sixth race of the season at Motorland with a fantastic second place finish – sandwiched between team-mates Verschoor and Opmeer. He ended the second event of the campaign fourth in his domestic F4 standings.
Dutch 16-year-old Danny Kroes, who is contesting selected rounds of the F4 Spanish series, is ninth in the championship for MP Motorsport with a best finish of fifth thus far during round six on his debut weekend in the category.
“It really has been a fantastic start to the F4 Spanish season for us and we’re absolutely delighted to be one-two in the championship with Richard and Jarno”, said MP Motorsport team manager Sander Dorsman, “Four wins from six races is an incredible start and with many other podiums too, we’re feeling very optimistic for the rest of the season. It was great to see Xavier take his first podium at Motorland, he had a great drive there, and Danny did a good job on his first weekend. We’re all really looking forward to the next rounds in Portugal, we plan to be just as strong there.”
The next three rounds of the FIA F4 Spanish Championship will take place at Portimao in Portugal over the weekend 9th/10th July with a visit to Estoril following a week later, on 16th/17th July.
