Monday, July 27th 2020 – The Great House Extension Project (Day 6)
So, the tree is now gone, Rob, the Structural Engineer, has drawn up the necessary plans for dealing with the remnants (the roots mostly) and Mal the builder has been back for another look at the site now it no longer has a tree on the corner. And that’s probably all he’s going to do before Day 16, August 10th.
“And why is that?” I hear you cry. “The tree is gone. Surely he should now be cracking on with the work?”
Well, it seems that people who own diggers are in short supply at present. The man who was booked to do the work of digging out the footings starting on July 22nd is not available until Tuesday August 11th. Given we were originally going to start on 13th July, we are now a month adrift and we HAVEN’T EVEN STARTED in any noticeable way.
On the plus side it has given us even more time to clear the wardrobes and the loft… Yesterday was all about electrical equipment. How many video recorders does one household need? Seriously? The answer is not 5. It’s probably 1 at most these days (and probably not the one with instructions in French only – though I’m more than capable of reading and understand it). Still, freecycle to the rescue yet again.
I read somewhere that by the time a man reaches forty he has a mile of unwanted and useless cable.

You may be onto something there. And we both inherited the collection as it stood on Monday from our fathers… I’ve narrowed it down to 2 of each for anything that connects via a USB and 1 each of what I regard as “standard” power cables. The rest (and there was a lot of it) is now gone!

Hi Stella.
Very interesting your post. Did loved this: “How many video recorders does one household need”. Excellent question. We have two. One just to watch old VHS and another to record from TV. One of our two TV:s is old and viewing VHS and it shows quite well them. Thank you for this post.
Have a good day!

Interesting reading your account of your extension work. I was amazed that you still had a VCR. We have a couple of DVD players and I can’t remember when we last used them. Everything seems to be digital downloads these days!
